About Walt Sorg

Indiana Capitol Dome, Flag_edited.jpg

I bring two assets to this campaign:

    * Decades of experience in state government

    * A new point of view

Huh? That seems to be a contradiction!

Here's the deal: I'm a relative newcomer to Indiana. My wife and I moved here (from Lansing MI) in 2021 to be close to our grandchildren (who are adorable and the center of our lives).

I brought with me nearly a half-century of experience in state government, giving me insight into ideas that are different from the prevailing wisdom: the accepted way of doing business in Indianapolis. That experience has also taught me about ideas that sounded good, but didn't work or had unintended consequences. I worked alongside Republicans and Democrats in a state government where the focus was on building consensus rather than governing through one-party power plays.

Our campaign to end gerrymandering attracted the support of "The Terminator" himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger!

Along the way I helped create and lead a grassroots effort (Voters Not Politicians)  to change the Michigan constitution bringing an end to gerrymandering, meaning voters choose their politicians instead of the politicians choosing their voters. Our all-volunteer non-partisan team built an organization of 7,000 volunteers which collected nearly 450,000 petition signatures. We wrote a constitutional amendment which was passed with 61% of the statewide vote.

This is at the heart of my political DNA: progress through consensus, listening to the people rather than commanding them and -- most of all -- listening to the people, not the professional politicians.

I want to leave my grandkids (and your family) with a better Indiana built through cooperation and collaboration rather than one-party power politics.
